A lot of people notice their skin looks different in summer and describe it as oilier, without being entirely sure why. The short answer is that heat and humidity both push sebaceous glands to produce more oil, and humidity also slows how quickly that oil evaporates or gets absorbed by clothing and air, so it sits visibly on the skin’s surface longer than it would in a dry, cool room.
The Two Separate Factors: Heat and Humidity
Sebaceous glands, the structures in skin that produce oil, are temperature sensitive. As skin temperature rises, oil production tends to increase. This is a separate mechanism from humidity itself. Humidity affects how oil and sweat behave once they reach the surface: in a humid environment, sweat evaporates more slowly, which is part of why humid heat feels so much more uncomfortable than dry heat at the same temperature. That same slow evaporation leaves a film of moisture and oil sitting on the skin, which is what people are usually describing when they say their face feels greasy by midafternoon in summer.
Sweat itself is not the same as oil. Sweat is mostly water with some salt and trace minerals, produced by eccrine glands. Oil, or sebum, comes from a different set of glands and is made mostly of lipids. In hot, humid weather the two mix on the skin’s surface, and the combination is what creates the shine and the slightly tacky feel that many people associate with summer skin.
The face is not producing a new type of oil in summer. It is producing more of the same oil, and that oil is evaporating more slowly because the air around it is already saturated with moisture.
Why This Shows Up Differently by Face Region
The T-zone, meaning the forehead, nose, and chin, has a higher concentration of sebaceous glands than the cheeks or jawline. That is true year-round, but the effect becomes more visible in summer because the baseline oil output is higher across the board. People who consider their skin combination or normal in cooler months sometimes describe feeling oily specifically in the T-zone during summer, while the cheeks stay closer to their usual state.
What Tends to Follow From Increased Oil
More surface oil, combined with more sweat and often more sunscreen reapplication, changes how the skin surface behaves over the course of a day. A few patterns show up consistently in summer months:
- Makeup or sunscreen sliding rather than staying put by early afternoon
- A shinier appearance, particularly across the forehead and nose, within a few hours of washing
- Clogged pores becoming more noticeable, since oil combined with sweat and sunscreen residue can sit in pores longer in humid air
- A need to blot or rinse more often than in cooler, drier months
Adjusting Routines Without Overcorrecting
The instinct in summer is often to strip oil away with harsher cleansers or to skip moisturizer entirely, on the reasoning that oily skin does not need more moisture. That reasoning is incomplete. Stripping oil too aggressively can prompt the skin to produce more oil to compensate, and skipping moisturizer does not reduce oil production, since oil and hydration are managed by different mechanisms in the skin. A lighter-weight, non-comedogenic moisturizer, rather than no moisturizer, tends to serve summer skin better than an empty routine.
Switching to a gel or lightweight lotion formula rather than a heavier cream is a more targeted response, since the goal in summer is reducing the sensation of heaviness and shine, not removing hydration from the skin. Blotting papers, which absorb surface oil without removing product underneath, are a low-intervention option for people who want to manage midday shine without re-cleansing the entire face.

An increase in oil during hot, humid weather is a normal physiological response, not a sign that skin type has permanently changed or that something has gone wrong with a routine that worked in other seasons. Skin type can shift gradually over years, but a summer-to-winter difference in oiliness is, for most people, a seasonal pattern that reverses on its own as temperature and humidity drop again. Persistent breakouts that do not track with the season, or oil production that stays elevated regardless of weather, are a different pattern and worth discussing with a dermatologist rather than managing through routine changes alone.
