Skin does not get drier in winter because the temperature drops. It gets drier because the air around it holds less water, and because most people spend the season inside rooms with the heat running. Both conditions pull moisture out of the outermost layer of skin, called the stratum corneum, faster than it can be replaced.

Cold air has a lower capacity to hold water vapor than warm air. Meteorologists describe this with relative humidity, and outdoor winter air in many parts of the United States sits well below the 40 to 60 percent range that skin tends to tolerate comfortably. Indoor heating makes the problem worse, not better. Forced-air heating systems warm the air without adding moisture back into it, so indoor relative humidity in a heated apartment or house can drop into the teens or low twenties, drier than some desert climates.

What Actually Happens to the Skin Barrier

The outermost layer of skin is built like a wall, with skin cells acting as bricks and lipids acting as mortar. That mortar layer, made up of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, holds water inside the skin and keeps irritants out. When the surrounding air is dry, water moves from inside the skin outward, through a process called transepidermal water loss. The drier the air, the steeper that gradient, and the faster water leaves.

Lower temperatures also slow oil production somewhat, though this effect is smaller and varies more by individual than the humidity effect. The combined result is a barrier that is both under-lubricated and under-hydrated, which is why winter skin often feels tight, looks flaky in patches, and reacts more easily to products that felt fine in summer.

Skin does not fail all at once in winter. It loses water in small increments, day after day, until the barrier is thin enough that irritation starts to show.

Signs the Barrier Is Under Strain

Flaking is the most visible sign, especially around the nose, cheeks, and jawline. Less obvious signs include a new sensitivity to products that were previously well tolerated, a tight feeling that shows up within an hour of washing the face, and faster reappearance of redness after any friction, like toweling off or pulling on a sweater.

What Changes and What Does Not

The most direct countermeasure is not more cleansing or more exfoliation. It is reducing water loss and, where possible, adding water back to the environment. A humidifier that brings a bedroom or main living space closer to 40 to 50 percent relative humidity addresses the root cause rather than treating the symptom. Cotton or paper hygrometers sold for a few dollars can confirm what the actual indoor humidity is, since guessing tends to be unreliable.

On the skin itself, richer moisturizers that contain occlusive ingredients, such as petrolatum, shea butter, or plant oils, sit on top of the skin and slow water from evaporating. This is a different mechanism than humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which draw water toward the skin but do nothing to stop it from leaving again in dry air. In winter, the two work better together than either does alone: a humectant-containing product applied to slightly damp skin, sealed with an occlusive layer on top.

In broad terms, hot water and harsh surfactants strip lipids that are already in short supply during winter, so a milder cleanser and lukewarm water do less damage to a barrier that is already working hard to hold onto moisture.

Travel and Sudden Climate Shifts

The same principle explains why skin can feel worse within a day or two of flying somewhere cold and dry, or spending a week in a ski town at altitude. Airplane cabins are notoriously low in humidity, often in the 10 to 20 percent range, and combined with a new dry destination climate, the skin gets a compressed version of an entire winter’s water loss in a much shorter window. Packing a richer moisturizer than usual, and applying it more often than at home, is a reasonable response to that kind of short, sharp exposure.

What This Does Not Mean

Dry, flaky winter skin is not automatically a sign of a skin condition or an allergy. It is a predictable response to a predictable seasonal change in humidity, and for most people it resolves as the environment does, whether that means spring arriving or a humidifier running through the winter months. Skin that stays irritated, cracked, or painful despite these adjustments is a different situation and worth discussing with a dermatologist rather than working through with over-the-counter changes alone.
