Most homes and apartments in the United States are heated with some form of forced-air system, whether that is a gas furnace, an electric heat pump, or baseboard heaters. All of them share a common side effect: they raise the temperature of indoor air without adding any moisture to it. The result is indoor air that can be significantly drier than the outdoor air on the other side of the wall, even in winter when outdoor humidity is already lower than in other seasons.

Why Heated Indoor Air Gets So Dry

Relative humidity describes how much water vapor air is holding compared to the maximum it could hold at that temperature. Warmer air can hold more water vapor than cold air. When cold outdoor air is drawn into a home and heated by a furnace, its capacity to hold water increases, but no water is added in the process, so the relative humidity of that air drops sharply. Indoor relative humidity in a heated home during winter can fall into the 15 to 25 percent range, which is drier than many desert regions.

Skin loses water to its surroundings whenever the surrounding air is drier than the water content of the skin itself, a process called transepidermal water loss. The bigger the gap between skin’s internal moisture and the air around it, the faster that water loss happens. A heated apartment at 20 percent relative humidity creates a much steeper gradient than the same room would at, say, 45 percent, which is closer to what most dermatology sources describe as a comfortable range for skin.

The thermostat controls temperature, not humidity. A room can feel warm and still be pulling water out of skin faster than a person can replace it.

How This Differs From Outdoor Winter Air

Outdoor winter air is also dry, but people are typically only exposed to it for short stretches, walking to a car or between buildings. Indoor heated air is something people sit in for eight, ten, sixteen hours at a stretch, including overnight while sleeping. That prolonged, continuous exposure is a large part of why skin tends to feel worse by midwinter than it does on the first cold day of the season. The effect is cumulative.

Signs Indoor Heating Is the Main Driver

A useful way to tell whether heated indoor air is contributing to dry skin, rather than something else like a new product or a change in routine, is to notice where and when the dryness shows up. A few patterns are common:

  • Skin feels tighter at the end of a workday spent indoors than it did that morning
  • Dryness is worse in rooms with the heat running directly, like a bedroom with a vent nearby, compared to less-heated spaces
  • Static in hair or clothing increases alongside skin dryness, since both are downstream of low ambient humidity
  • Lips and hands, which have thinner skin and fewer oil glands, dry out faster than the face

What Actually Helps

The most direct fix addresses the humidity gap itself rather than only treating the skin after the fact. A humidifier, sized appropriately for the room, can bring indoor relative humidity back toward the 40 to 50 percent range that skin tolerates more comfortably. A basic hygrometer, inexpensive and widely available, is worth using to check actual humidity levels rather than guessing, since a room can feel comfortable in temperature while still being quite dry.

On the skin side, richer moisturizers that rely on occlusive ingredients, such as petrolatum, plant oils, or shea butter, form a layer that slows water evaporating from the skin’s surface. This is a different job than a humectant ingredient like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which pulls water toward the skin but does not stop it from leaving again once the surrounding air is dry enough. In a heated apartment, layering a humectant product on slightly damp skin and sealing it with an occlusive moisturizer addresses both sides of the problem.

Bedrooms Deserve Particular Attention

Because people spend more consecutive hours in a bedroom than almost anywhere else, and because heat is often run overnight, bedrooms are frequently the driest room in a heated home. A humidifier placed in the bedroom, run overnight, tends to have an outsized effect on how skin looks and feels in the morning compared to running it in a living room used for only a few hours a day.

What This Does Not Mean

Dryness that tracks closely with the heating season, and that improves with a humidifier or with milder cleansing, is a predictable seasonal pattern rather than a sign of a new skin condition. It is worth separating from dryness that persists into warmer months, does not respond to humidity changes, or comes with cracking, bleeding, or ongoing irritation, which are better discussed with a dermatologist than managed through routine adjustments alone.
